Psychiatric Mental Health Services & Eating Disorders Q & A

What is psychiatric mental health?

Psychiatric conditions and mental health disorders include the same conditions. The difference between the two is that mental health tends to have a broader meaning.

When supporting your mental health, Myriam helps with all the aspects of your life that contribute to your mental well-being, from your work environment and whether you have supportive friends to the normal stress you face each day.

What conditions do psychiatric mental health services treat?

Psychiatric and mental health services include many disorders that affect your psychological, emotional, and behavioral health. Without treatment, these disorders interfere with your ability to build healthy relationships, meet your daily responsibilities, and find success and satisfaction at work and home.

MyHealth LLC treats psychiatric and mental health conditions such as:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Depression
  • Insomnia disorder
  • Substance abuse disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Eating disorders

Myriam also offers stress management. Though stress isn’t classified as a mental health disorder, it contributes to psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

What eating disorders do mental health specialists treat?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that develop from negative thoughts and feelings about food, body weight, and body image.

Myriam often helps people with binge eating disorder and bulimia, the two most common eating disorders:

Bulimia

People with bulimia have frequent and repeated episodes when they eat large amounts of food. Then they compensate for overeating to ensure they don’t gain weight. Compensatory behaviors include self-induced vomiting, taking laxatives, and engaging in excessive exercise. During an eating episode, you don’t have control over what or how much you’re eating.

Binge eating disorder

If you have binge eating disorder, you uncontrollably eat a large amount of food (often to the point of discomfort) in a short time. Afterward, you feel ashamed, distressed, or guilty. Unlike bulimia, people with binge eating disorder do not regularly engage in compensatory behaviors.

What complications develop due to eating disorders?

People with bulimia and binge eating disorder tend to fluctuate in weight, noticeably gaining and losing weight. However, up to two-thirds of those with binge eating disorder are obese and develop health problems associated with obesity, such as Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

The binge-and-purge cycles of bulimia affect your digestive tract and may cause chemical imbalances that affect your heart, muscles, nerves, and other organs.
