ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs due to imbalances in brain chemicals and reduced activity in certain parts of the brain.

The areas of the brain that ADHD affects lead to problems in attention and self-regulation. Difficulties with self-regulation cause hyperactive and impulsive behaviors. ADHD also makes it hard to regulate emotions.

At least a few signs of ADHD appear before the age of 12, and a diagnosis of the condition usually occurs in children and teens. However, ADHD often continues into adulthood and may go undiagnosed until the adult years.

At every age, people with ADHD struggle with symptoms significant enough to interfere with their ability to succeed in daily life. They may have a hard time making friends, developing relationships, or achieving success at school or work.

What symptoms does ADHD cause?

ADHD symptoms fall into two categories: inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive. People with ADHD may have symptoms from one or both categories.

Inattentive ADHD symptoms

Difficulty paying attention defines this category. People with ADHD can’t focus on the task at hand, and they have a hard time organizing and finishing their tasks. Inattention leads to missing important details, a tendency to lose important items, and not listening to others (like parents and teachers).

Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD symptoms

The most common symptoms associated with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD include:

  • Talking excessively
  • Being constantly on the go
  • Having poor impulse control
  • Feeling impatient or restless
  • Having a hard time taking turns or waiting
  • Interrupting conversations
  • Struggling to sit still or always fidgeting

ADHD often causes short-term memory problems. Your short-term memory gives you the ability to hold several pieces of information in your head for a brief time, just long enough to complete a task.

How is ADHD treated?

At MyHealth LLC, Myriam takes a holistic approach to help people with ADHD, considering all the variables that affect their mental health, including their general health and nutrition. Though foods don’t cause ADHD, changing an unhealthy diet can go a long way toward improving ADHD symptoms.

After completing a psychological assessment, Myriam may prescribe medications that improve attention. She also offers behavioral therapy that focuses on a person’s specific challenges. For example, learning organizational skills or techniques for managing behavioral and emotional problems.
